I have read my fair share of nineteenth and twentieth century poetry. I love Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Edgar Allan Poe and Maya Angelou. But with that being said, for whatever reason, it’s just extremely rare that I ever read modern poetry by current authors. Maybe I just don’t want to take the risk. But I made an exception this time after seeing an extraordinary video of the author performing her poem “Explaining My Depression to My Mother.” I immediately came to Amazon to buy the book, and I even paid extra for same-day delivery. Somehow in my rush, I even managed to accidentally order two copies.I would say that the tone of the book is kind of like a day in the life of a twenty-something millennial. She laments lost loves, the unreliability of her father, and the would-be helpful codependence of her mother.I don’t know enough about the author to have any sense of how much of the book is autobiographical and how much of it is fiction, but it felt like there was a ring of personal truth in Benaim’s writing. I could personally relate to many of the themes in the book, especially those related to body issues and eating/weight, as well as anxiety issues. Benaim tackles other difficult topics such as the divorce of her parents and, of course, depression.One of the first things you might notice is the lack of capitalization and frequent lack of any punctuation whatever. I’m a bit of a grammar stickler, so I wasn’t sure how that was going to work for me, but soon enough I completely forgot about it.There were a few lines in particular that stood out to me as particularly shattering.From nature versus nurture:…when my father tells me i am beautiful,i always hope it’s because i remind him of my mother.From follow up a prayer / a spell:when i look in the mirror i see a reflectionof the gifts i withhold from myself.Final say: 5/5 stars, and I didn’t even have to think about it. I’m a fan. I’m sure I’ll come back to it many times. The content is good and the poetry itself is sharp. I really enjoyed living in her world for an hour or two, and I’ll buy her next book. And one final thing: I feel like I have to say kudos to whoever made that cover. It’s perfect.

Sabrina is just amazing. Between her and neil hillborn I've become a poetry addict and even started writing myself to help through my divorce.

I love this book. The poet has amazing dexterity with words and the fact that she uses that dexterity to talk about depression, loneliness, longing makes this a book so easy to relate to. Some of her metaphors are just so surprising, yet so right. Makes me wish I could write like her!

I've been battling my depression and anxiety a lot lately and also just mutually broke up with my boyfriend of 4 years. I bought this book that same day. It's not long, but it's so amazing. Really is like talking to a friend. There were a few poems that even brought me to tears. Sabrina is a fantastic poet and I cannot wait for more from her.

I came across Sabrina performing spoken word in a Facebook video, and I fell in love with her poetry. I was so excited to get this book and it did not disappoint. The words are so relatable and te images they create are magical. This is my favorite book I have read in quite some time.

This book is small but mighty! I personally can take something out of every poem and feel like this book was written for me (not to sound cheesy lol) I’ve read this book 3-4 times so far and the spine hasn’t broken and the corners of the pages are still in great shape. High quality material and amazing relatable content! This is a book that needs to be in everybody’s shelf. I plan on ordering a few more to give my sister and my best friend for Christmas

I love the passion of this book. I find myself highlighting sentences and drawing in the margins. I’m excited to pass this book along to my friends when I’m finished with it. To the author - thank you for your honesty and willingness to share.

Driven by a passion for collecting vinyl, originally bands and then entire labels, I became increasingly frustrated at incorrect information bandied about by so-called experts, dealers and other collectors. So, I thought I'd create my own detailed reference guide to this highly collectible, eclectic and eccentric record label from 1969-1972 (the label carried on after Stratton-Smith sold out to Virgin Records, but the really collectible stuff is this 'pink scroll' selection up to 1972).There's even some interesting anecdotal stories about the sleeve designers, photographers and printers in some cases, so it's more than a discography list, much more.I hope you enjoy it and I pray I haven't made too many factual errors. From the Inside Flap Charisma Records launched in 1969 and became a typically English, slightly eccentric record label with an eclectic artist roster that included rock bands, jazz bands, classical orchestras and even a comedy sketch group, in the form of Monty Python's Flying Circus. Charisma was founded and managed by 36 year old Tony Stratton Smith, a typically English, slightly eccentric, bon-viveur, horse-race-loving former sports journalist and rock group manager who did what he wanted, when he wanted and wasn't the least bit afraid of putting his money where his mouth was.The label became famous for launching the careers of Genesis, Lindisfarne and Van der Graaf Generator. But, like many new, independent labels of the late 1960s and early '70s, it released several 'one-album-wonders' that were total commercial failures and, in many cases, never heard from again.Which makes a significant number of early Charisma 'pink scrolls' (as they have become known amongst record collectors) highly prized - irrespective of their oft-dubious artistic merit!

For anyone interested in broad concepts of science, this is a great introductory book to expand your horizons. It's cute, it speaks in laymen's terms, and it gets the point across. Great to skim through or have on your coffee table as well

This insightful little book tells you more than you ever imagined you would want to know about hundreds of scientific subjects, with delightful illustrations adding to the lessons. Highly recommended.

Bought three of these (this, the Math, and the Ideas books) as gifts and they were all very much loved. Great coffee table book for quick reference on subjects you may be interested in but have little knowledge with. The summaries are very easy to read and even knowing a lot of the subjects myself there's a lot to learn. Highly recommend for anyone who likes science, even if you've never studied it before.

I bought this book just for leisure and I think it's a good little book with a lot of info but I can't tell you how accurate the info is though. I would recommend, even my 10 yr old son likes reading this book.

Her bi-cultural background enables her to draw a bridge of understanding between East and West in a unique manner, thereby contributing to peace.Monique Arav MA, Dip. Int. has worked with Fawzia Al-Rawi on many projects that have required cross-cultural sensitivity to achieve their vital communicative aims. Her own multi-cultural origins and background together with her generosity of spirit and love for inner beauty serve to make her more than a fitting communicator for this particular book.Majed Seif is a New York-based visual artist specializing in Arabic calligraphy, Arabesque, and other Islamic arts. Pretty awesome book. Comes with a link to download the authors recitation of the names.I love the fact that the Quran offers more than one name for God. This lets the reader seek God through different attributes, under different circumstances. For example, al - 'Aziz "the powerful, strong, beloved," nature of God can be reflected upon when in need of a source of strength, or Ar - Raheem "the boundlessly merciful" nature of God can be used when in need of love and affection.The author provides great insight into the meanings of each name.It is also worth noting that reflection on different attributes of God is not limited to Islam. Followers of the Hindu faith, for example, use the name Brahman for the one God and associate different attributes with other names; Vishnu "the Preserver or the Protector," Shiva "the Transformer."

This book is intended for English speakers who want to understand better how to use the Divine Names in prayer. The divine quality contained in each name is explained in highly readable English and the 3 consonant Arabic root is identified. Each name is accompanied by a beautiful Arabic calligraphy rendering of the name. The specific healing power of each name is accessed through recitation. (A free MP3 file of the 99 Names may be downloaded from the author's website.) Sufis believe Arabic is one of the "sound-key" languages--that is that the vibration of the sounds themselves carry power to affect the human body, soul, and spirit. Reciting the names or a specific name brings healing. This reviewer is a mere novice at the practice, but I have definitely experienced benefits from praying in this way. I have also seen positive changes in others for whom I have prayed some divine names. If you value the heart opening and heart healing practice of "Remembrance of God," or want to learn about it from a learned Sufi teacher, this book will inspire.

This book was used in a class that I took and I was so intrigued that I had to meet with the instructor to learn more about Sufism. The words are very powerful and a wonderful addition to prayer and meditation.

Beautiful descriptions, showing a divine balance of qualities and attributes and how we can better understand them, how they relate to the whole, and to each other, and what they mean for us. It's my favorite book today, about the 99 names of Allah.

About the Author
Steven C. Hause is Senior Scholar in the Humanities and Co-Director of European Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He was formerly. Professor of History and Fellow in International Studies at the University of Missouri¿St. Louis, where he has won the Chancellor¿s Award for Excellence in Teaching (1996) and the Pierre Laclede Honors College Teacher of the Year Award (1989). He is the author and co-author of three previous books on the history of the women¿s rights movement in modern France, which have won four research prizes: WOMEN¿S SUFFRAGE AND SOCIAL POLITICS IN THE FRENCH THIRD REPUBLIC, with Anne R. Kenney (Princeton University Press, 1984); HUBERTINE AUCLERT, THE FRENCH SUFFRAGETTE (Yale University Press, 1987); and FEMINISMS OF THE BELLE EPOQUE, with Jennifer Waelti-Walters (University of Nebraska Press, 1994). His essays have appeared in several journals, including AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW AND FRENCH HISTORICAL STUDIES.

William S. Maltby is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, where he continues to teach on a regular basis. MARK AYERS is manager of RF Engineering at GCI Communications Corp headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska. He has a broad range of telecommunications experience in fiber optics, microwave radio, and satellite network design. Mr. Ayers holds a BS degree in mathematics from the University of Alaska Anchorage and an MS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He is a registered Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Alaska, a senior member in the IEEE, and teaches a variety of courses in the Engineering Department at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
